According to a report from Reuters, Grupo Modelo is “aware of speculation over deal with Anheuser Busch Inbev” but says it is “continually evaluating various strategic options.” Modelo says has had talks with ABI over a deal to expand its existing relationship, and Modelo says talks may or may not result in a deal and speculation is premature.
Banking sources told Reuters the two sides were in close talks but the sticking point was the size of the premium the Modelo families can extract from AB InBev. “The families are willing to sell but they want a big price as they see a big boost for AB InBev from owning 100 percent of Modelo,” said one banker close to the talks.
Modelo shares were up 13% this morning.
