Dear Client: Top-five grocers Kroger and Albertsons announced today that they are working on plans for a potential merger, reports CNBC. Kroger– the second-largest grocer in the US behind Walmart– agreed to purchase No.4 Albertsons for $24.6 billion, pending regulatory approval. Kroger currently makes up about 10% share of total dollars spent, while Albertsons comes in at about 6%. Walmart has a healthy lead at about 21% market share.
